A New Climbing Wall

In case you haven’t heard, we have an exciting new addition to our physical education program.  Thanks to our PTA and a grant from the town of Holly Springs, we have installed a climbing wall in our multipurpose room.  It is designed for students to climb horizontally with their feet below 3 feet.  The wall will provide a challenging yet safe experience for K-5 students.  The wall will be introduced during PE classes and closely supervised.  Why a climbing wall?  Research has shown that in addition to the “fun-factor,” participation on a climbing wall helps children develop in the following areas:
  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Cooperation
  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Problem-solving skills.
Safety will be a primary concern when our wall is in use.  Below are the safety rules that all Holly Grove Hedgehogs must follow:
  • Used only with teacher permission and supervision
  • Feet must be kept below the safety line
  • Students must climb down not jump
  • A teacher or another child must “spot” the student while climbing.
  • Students should not climb, walk, or stand beneath other climbers.
  • Mats should be under the climbing wall when in use.
Failure to follow these rules will result in loss of climbing privileges.  In addition students must wear appropriate footwear to climb the wall.
